India hosts inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup Cricket for the Blind

NewDelhi,TNM:  Opening a new chapter in world cricket, the SBI Women’s T20 World Cup Cricket for the Blind 2025 was inaugurated at Modern School Ground, New Delhi, celebrating inclusion and women’s empowerment through sport.The tournament, organised by the World Blind Cricket Council (WBCC) and hosted by Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) and Sri Lanka Cricket Association of Visually Handicapped (SLCAVH) under the Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, features teams from six nations — India, Australia,  Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the USA. The  matches are being  held in New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Colombo until November 23.

 The inaugural event opened with a ceremonial march past of participating nations, attended by dignitaries including Anurag Thakur, MP and Former Minister of Sports;Meenakshi Lekhi, Former Minister of State for External Affairs and Chairperson of the Organising Committee;  Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy, National Security Advisory Board Member; Dr. Mahantesh G. Kivadasannavar, Founder of Samarthanam Trust and Chairman of CABI;  Rajanish Henry, Secretary General , World Blind Cricket Council (WBCC); Kartikeya Sharma, MP (Rajya Sabha); Philip Green, Australian High Commissioner; and Mahishini Colonel, Sri Lankan High Commissioner. 

 

Anurag Thakur iin his naugural address   lauded the organisers for giving global visibility to women athletes with visual impairment.Meenakshi Lekhi  in her address said that  the championship symbolised courage and equality. This is about determination, fighting back, and fighting well.These girls prove that determination and the right mindset can overcome any barrier. Their spirit inspires us all,” she said.

Dr. Mahantesh G. Kivadasannavar,Chairman of CABI described the event as “a statement that talent and passion know no barriers.  Rajanish Henry,  Secretary General , World Blind Cricket Council (WBCC) called it a landmark in the history of blind women’s cricket. 'What unfolds here goes beyond competition. This is a movement which inspires the visually impaired community across the world.

In the opening match, Sri Lanka, electing to bat first, were bowled out for just 41 runs in 13.3 overs. India’s vice-captain Ganga S. Kadam starred with a brilliant all-round performance, claiming a wicket and effecting five stunning run-outs. Deepika T.C. and Jamuna Rani Tudu picked up a wicket each, restricting Sri Lanka’s total.

In reply, the Indian openers chased down the target effortlessly, reaching 43 without loss in just 3 overs. Skipper Deepika T.C. led from the front with an unbeaten 26 off 14 balls, while Anekha Devi contributed a quick 15 off 6 balls.Ganga Kadam was named Player of the Match as India opened their World Cup journey on a resounding note.The tournament is supported by State Bank of India, HCL, Adobe, and LIC.
